Federal and state laws combine to prohibit discrimination in employment based on race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, marital status, height, weight or sexual orientation. Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination and is therefore illegal. It is also illegal for anyone to take reprisals against an employee because that employee has filed a discrimination complaint or because an employee has assisted in a complaint proceeding.

The following laws prohibit employment discrimination:

  • MI Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, Sections 210 and 507
  • MI Handicappers? Civil Rights Act, Section 208, 403, 507
  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e, et. seq., as amended
  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act, 29 U.S.C. 621, et. seq.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 U.S.C. 794
  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, 42 U.S.C. 12101
