Sign Language Interpreter Program

Since 1978 - the Sign Language Interpreter Program at LCC

Graduates of LCC's Sign Language Interpreter Program find employment in both private and public enterprises.  As a Sign Language interpreter you can expect to go wherever deaf or hearing persons may need interpreting services.  The speed with which a student completes the program varies according to individual characteristics such as motivation and learning style, as well as the number of courses enrolled per semester. Those interested in becoming sign language interpreters find the most success in taking all of the SIGN courses offered to become fluent in ASL.

Jobs for Sign Language Interpreters include interpreting for public schools, colleges and universities, medical and legal institutions and organizations, mental health facilities, video relay centers, religious settings, and many more private and public organizations and institutions.  Sign Language Interpreting is a very rewarding career and requires a highly specialized skill-set.  The most successful students will be committed to acquiring American Sign Language (ASL) as a second language.  As a Sign Language student, you will need to seek out social interactions within the Deaf community and take advantage of opportunities to apply and enhance your proficiency in ASL.

LCC's Sign Language Interpreter Program is accredited by North Central and the Higher Learning Commission. LCC's Sign Language Interpreter Program has a 3+1 program with Siena Heights University for Sign Language students to obtain their BA. SHU has a satellite campus conveniently located across from the LCC campus on Capitol Ave at the at the University Center and offers an online format option. Sign Language Advising Seminars

The Sign Language Interpreter program highly recommends completion of this seminar for all new and transfer students. This seminar provides a thorough understanding of the Sign Language Interpreter Training Program including requirements, course schedule and progression as well as a comprehensive overview of the profession of Sign Language Interpreting in the state of Michigan. The seminars are available for students to attend at any of the dates and times listed below. ASL Skills Assessments:

If you have previous experience with American Sign Language (ASL), you may request a Skills Assessment, which will evaluate the candidate’s linguistic competence in ASL. Linguistic competence is decided based on knowledge and use of lexicon, syntax, fingerspelling, spatial use, non-manual markers, and conversational markers. We recommend that candidates have a minimum of 1 year of 12 credits of formal ASL study (documented at the postsecondary level) before requesting a Skills Assessment. Skills Assessments are offered following any of our Advising Seminars (see schedule above).

The Sign Language Club

The Sign Language Club organizes many different on and off campus events during the school year. Please join us! The calendar is above. The SLC also facilitates a mentor/mentee program amongst beginning and advanced LCC sign language students. The purpose of the program is to provide novice students and seasoned students a chance to share and grow together. A productive mentoring relationship depends on a good match. Participants will bring various competencies, backgrounds, learning styles and needs to each pairing. For more information, or to apply, you may download applications for either group below:

ITP Screening Information

Who can screen? Students who have successfully completed or are currently enrolled in SIGN 163 (ASL 3), SIGN 166 (Fingerspelling), SIGN 167 (Beginning Sign to Voice), and SIGN 170 (Expressive/Receptive ASL) .

When is the screening? The ITP screening will begin the 3rd Monday in July through that Wednesday. Additional days will only be opened if the need arises.

How do I sign up? The application is located below for you to download and fill out. They'll also be made available on the D2L course site. You must turn in your application to the department office, GB 1222, on or before the specified deadline. A signup sheet will be in the office for you to select a date and time.

Hearing Requirements

Provide acceptable results of pure tone audiometric testing of unaided hearing acuity according to the following table of worst acceptable thresholds* as well as no disease or condition of the middle or internal ear, nose, oral cavity, pharynx, or larynx that:

  1. Interferes with hearing regular speech and/or speaking at a functional level, or may reasonably be expected to do so; or
  2. Interferes with, or may reasonably be expected to interfere with, clear and effective speech communication.

Practicum Orientation
The work-study portion of the ITP is the Practicum. Students are required to follow all of the college (LCC's) policies when attending sites and events, as well as the policies for behavior, attire, and professionalism established by the ITP. The Practicum Orientation is a 6-hour workshop to introduce new students to what is expected of them while representing LCC and the ITP. The Practicum Orientation takes place each year on the first Saturday of the Fall semester.

Please note: Do not try to register for SIGN 240 & 261 until after you've received your letter in August.
