What They Do:
A multimedia designer is a computer artist who uses many electronic
tools to create interactive art. Multimedia designers must have creative
abilities and design, drawing, problem-solving, production, communication, and
presentation skills. Multimedia is a cooperative process. The multimedia
designer should expect to work as part of a team which may include animators,
graphic designers, photographers, audio and video producers, writers and others.
Multimedia is a substantial part of the visual arts in the 90's, encompassing illustration, advertising, video, training, and photography. The multimedia designer is distinguished from the fine artist in that their work is used for a functional or "practical " purpose. The general work of the multimedia designer will be on CD-ROM or the World Wide Web. Multimedia Designers work for advertising agencies, on-line magazines and newspapers, the education & entertainment industry, in-house training and TV and film studios.

multimedia designer can expect to work both alone and as a part of a team which
may include animators, graphic designers, photographers, audio/video producers
and writers.
What They Earn:
Entry-level multimedia positions can vary from $11.00 to $16.00 per
hour, depending on the employment situation and responsibilities. Salaried
positions may begin at around $20,000 to $26,000, with experienced animators
earning over $75,000 per year. Animation artists can sometimes work as
freelancers, with widely varying hourly rates, depending on the region
($75.-$200. per hour).
How Many Jobs Available:
The outlook for employment in multimedia design for the future
indicate continued growth, about as fast as the average job. The skill set
required for employment is constantly upgraded as new hardware and software
solutions emerge. The competition for higher level employment is high and all
employment is based on the quality and content of a portfolio of examples of
work presented for employment.
How Much Schooling, Training, or Skill Development:
Entry into the profession of multimedia design is directly related
to the evidence of skills displayed in a prospective employee's portfolio. Many
employers require a minimum of a 2-year college degree for attainment of
positions at certain levels, but again, the acquisition of skills to do the job
is the most important issue.
